Cranking the snare right up

I lent my 12" mapex snare to a student, and he loves playing it with the top head really tightened up. So anyway, I got the drum back from him and set it up on my last gig and played it in the sound check. Man, cranked up it's so cool for playing funk! I couldn't leave it like that because it didn't suit the other tunes we do, but it does mean I'm gonna have a second snare set up with that tensioning. The sound and pitch reminded me of steve jordans sanre sound on a dave sanborn album I've got. High pitched with a touch of ring to it. Try it, it's great and makes you play differently.

Might I offer a suggestion to ease the tension on the lugs and eventually the shell...

Next time you come across a busted 12" drum head, trim away all the material from the rim, and then sandwich the rim between your existing rim and hoop on your 12" snare. You won't have to crank down as much. Hope this helps.

Very weird! I did the same only today...cranked it up way tight and LOVED it! I'm trying to make it "stretch" over to a few less funkafied tunes, but it does have a signature cut through sound...very fun indeed!

I did that to my snare about a week ago. I really love the sound that comes out of it when it's cranked up. Very funky.

Speaking of "cranking it up tight," I just got Garibaldi's TofP's Oakland Zone and I was disappointed in his snare sound. It was so thin to me. He cranked it up too tight. Maybe it was all post production stuff, but the snare did not cut through (more depth w/crack) like I would have liked.
